At least it is for the many college sports fans of the West coast that have been patiently waiting for a network to carry all their much loved college conference games in other areas. DIRECTV will be the proud carrier of the MountainWest Sports Network (The Mtn), with the launch date scheduled to be no later than September 1, 2008, if not sooner. Mtn is the first network in the nation dedicated to the Division l Mountain West Conference (MWC), a college conference. Mtn will be broadcast throughout the nation for DIRECTV customers and college sports fans throughout the country. Although the date has been tentatively scheduled, details about the channels and programming package will be available as the date of the final launch gets near. The staff at Mtn and DIRECTV is almost as excited about the wide range of comprehensive sports coverage The Mtn will provide as the passionate college sports fans are. The Mountain West Conference got its start in 1999 and since has made it their goal to promote and provide excellence to their collegiate athletics as well as provide the best academics to the learning institutions and to its members. The Mountain West Conference, which is about to celebrate its 10th anniversary is made up of the following nine Division l institutions:
The MountainWest Sports Network premiered in September 2006 with the goal of providing full in-depth coverage of the Division l Mountain West Conference. They are owned jointly by CBS College Sports Network and Comcast. MWC's mission, which has been more than successful, was to provide the viewers with more than just coverage of the games but to provide full in-depth coverage in all aspects of the sports involved. Throughout the year, viewers can see more than 200 collegiate sporting events with coverage of basketball, football, conference championship games and even Olympic sports. In addition to the game coverage, viewers also have access to the coaches' shows, news programming, and pre-game as well as post game analysis and special programs about the Mountain West Conference athletics. Now after two years of anticipation, viewers and avid fans can watch this popular network all across the country. No longer will people moving out of the area, and not having cable, have to worry about never being able to watch their favorite MWC teams or hear their latest news and transactions. MWC is now being offered by over 20 different cable companies in 1.2 million homes across the nation. Versus and CSTV, partners of MWC, also have ability and option to broadcast certain MWC games with cable and satellite companies. With the new deal between MWC and DIRECTV, an addition of 16.8 viewers will have access to the many collegiate games and programming choices. MWC is excited at the idea of DIRECTV broadcasting their network and hopes that this may encourage their competitor, Dish Network, to do the same, which will increase the courage to even more areas and homes. Fans and interested viewers have long awaited this decision, often sending in complaints to the network with hopes of getting this popular sports network picked up by other satellite companies. MountainWest Sports Network even sponsored commercials giving viewers the telephone numbers of satellite companies so viewers could call and express their interest in having the network broadcast in a wider area so more interested people would be able to view their favorite conference teams regardless of where they were located. Fortunately, this paid off for the fans. The reason for the goal of September 1, 2008 as their starting date was viewers would have access to the start of the college football season. Although DIRECTV agreeing to carry the Mtn was a great deal for many viewers in many locations, there are still some metropolitan areas, such as those in Dallas, Fort Worth and Arlington, which are still not able to get the network. There is still hope that local cable companies like Charter Communications and Time Warner Cable will agree to carry The Mtn in the near future. |
